Westminster, which was founded as a Presbyterian temperance colony in 1870 by Rev. Lemuel Webber, is located in Orange County, California. The name comes from the Westminster Assembly of 1643, where all the rules for the Presbyterian faith were laid out. For many years, farmers in the area refused to grow grapes because of their connection to alcohol. The city is completely landlocked, and is bordered by Seal Beach, Garden Grove, Huntington Beach, and Fountain Valley. During the 1970′s, a large number of Vietnamese refugees moved to the city and settled in what is referred to as Little Saigon. In 1996, the city won the All–American City Award. Among Westminster′s top employers are Southern California Edison, Ito Farms, BE Aerospace, and Sears.The city's climate is basically the same as it is over most of Orange County, with summer average temperatures in the mid 70′s to 80′s and winter temperatures in the mid 40′s. There are four school districts that serve the city; they include the Westminster School District, the Garden Grove Unified School District, Huntington Beach Union High School, and the Ocean View School District. The city is host to several annual events, such as The Tree Lighting Ceremony, Flag Day and The Founder′s day Festival. Other points of interest include Sigler Park Splash Pad, The Liberty Skatepark, several city parks, both adult and youth sports programs, and a Vietnam War Memorial. The Westminster Mall is a big retail center with over 180 stores. Several notable people have called Westminster home, some of them include professional MMA fight Nam Phan, professional skateboarder Dylan Rieder, and former professional basketball player Mark Eaton.
